November brought a big change in the weather. We should preface this by explaining that the weather is very moderate here in Guatemala City. Places outside the City are always warmer, like when we go to Salama, which is 3+ hours north, and even San Pedro Ayampuc, which is less than an hour north. We arrived here is July and during the summer we had highs in the City around 80 degrees. Now temperatures range between the low 50s in the morning and the low 70s in the heat of the day. We even get cold now, especially in the morning and evening. Our apartment doesn't have either air conditioning or a heater, and we seldom wish we had them. The real change, though, has been in the precipitation! The rainy season is from about May to October. We had
heavy rain nearly every afternoon, or at least five or six days a week. But since the dry season started in November, we haven't had any rain! It has been virtually turned off. When we drive outside the City we can now begin to see the effects. Hills are getting drier, and will in time turn brown in some areas. When we were up to Salama a week ago we noticed this grass which is now going to seed. Whole hillsides are covered with these rosy seed-tops.
