We are beginning to learn our many responsibilities. Some assignments will relieve the office missionaries of tasks they have been doing, while others will lighten the load of the President’s wife. In addition, we look forward to a trip to Salama in a week. This is the area where we are assigned, and will serve with three branches that are part of the Salama District. Because this area is about three hours out from our apartment, we expect that we will drive there two or three weekends a month and stay in a hotel for two or three nights each time. The President and his wife have traveled all over the northern end of Guatemala for a year, so they have identified the best hotels! They will go with us on our first visit, which is good, as it is difficult to learn one’s way around on these small roads.
Yesterday we visited with two sisters who were having housing issues. They are living in a large home that used to be used as the church building. Until a week ago, Elders have lived there, but these Sisters were assigned there during this last change. Because of its isolated location at the end of a dirt road outside of town, unsecured gates, no outside lighting, and numerous other factors, we recommended that they move to a safer apartment, one which had already been located in the center of town. Although we don’t have the authority to make that decision, we feel that we are the “eyes” for the President’s wife who oversees these kinds of matters, and we want these sweet girls to be safe. They should move this week.
