Saturday we made our first visit to the Guatemala City Central Market. It is located downtown in the historical section of town, directly behind the large cathedral on the plaza. It is an indoor market, three levels underground...non-stop booths with various wares--pottery, baskets, trinkets, fabric, produce, and other foods. We went with a neighboring missionary couple who bought a variety of fruits and vegetables. There are many different fruits and vegetables here! It is the end of mango season, but Rick picked one up this week and said he hasn't had one like that since his mission 38 years ago! Pineapples and kiwis are always good! We bought a piece of Guatemalan fabric to make a tablecloth for our kitchen table and this hand-embroidered wall banner. The musician is surrounded by two Quetzal birds (the national bird) and is playing the marimba (the national instrument.) Makes you sort of wonder if the U.S. has a national instrument! The words "Dios Bendiga Este Hogar" mean "God Bless This Home."
