This week we had our first major earthquake here, though it was not centered near us. The epicenter was about 200 km west of Guatemala City, off the Pacific coast near the mountain region that includes the town of San Marcos. There was major damage and at least 52 people lost their lives in and near San Marcos and Quetzaltenango in the 7.4 quake. That area is not in our mission, so we don't know many of the details. It hit about 10:30 a.m. and seemed to last for 30 seconds. We were in our apartment, and even though it was pretty far away, it really shook and we thought it lasted a long time! No damage here, though; just something to write home about!
