Road Hazards
We sometimes think that the roads in Utah are bad, especially with the potholes that develop after the snowy winter. But even without snow, Guatemala has Utah beat! Heavy rains don't mix well with the steep mountainsides; erosion eats away at the foundation of the roads. This is our favorite hundimiento, a place where the road has sunken or broken and fallen off. Where most hundimientos take just the edge of the road or maybe half the lane, this one took the whole road...and then some! We passed by it twice this weekend on the way to and from Salama. Crews now have a temporary detour around the hole, and are making the repair, including adding a large drainage culvert underneath. Everywhere we've driven the hundimientos are well marked, and sometimes repair has begun, but we make a point of not driving much at night, especially in these areas outside the city.
