Our daughter Shauna and her husband, John, came for a visit April 25th. We packed into 3 1/2 days as much fun and adventure as we could, trying to share with them some of the things we have seen and enjoyed. We saw churches and markets in Antigua, windy roads on the way to Lake Atitlan, a spectacular lightning show over the waters of the lake at dusk, beautiful gardens, colorful birds, tours of San Juan and Santiago via tuk-tuks (the little, red, 3-wheeled golf cart-like taxi), and Church at the branch in San Pedro Ayampuc. What tour would be complete without that? This woman in San Juan explained how
they use natural substances to make dyes for their cotton threads...things like carrots, coffee, and various flowers. And how do they set the colors so they don't wash out in the wash? After they are dyed, the yarn or thread is cooked with a solution that includes banana bark! So then we watched women in Santiago doing their wash in the lake...and their colors did not wash out!
