Guatemala City has some very nice malls. And because the more humble portion of society is so much more evident, we sometimes wonder, "Who shops at these malls?" We know that there are plenty of people in this big city who are well-to-do, but their houses are often hidden behind tall cement walls or found in high-rise apartment buildings. But Tuesday night we attended an event with thousands of them!
Rick has often thought of surprising me with tickets to an Andrea Bocelli concert. Who would of thought that it would happen in Guatemala City? Tuesday was our anniversary, so when we heard that he had a one-night concert just 20 minutes from our apartment on
the very day of our anniversary we couldn't resist. But that was not the only surprise. We went early and had dinner at the beautiful Cayala Mall, as we knew that traffic would be a problem. It wasn't until after dinner that we discovered that the concert was not
in the theater there...it was
outdoors in a newly created amphitheater out under the stars! Well, actually there were no stars...which is why we were also surprised by a rain shower! Fortunately the light shower only lasted for 5 or 10 minutes just before the program started. We also expected the show to start at 8:00pm, but it was almost 1 1/2 hours late! It appears that it was delayed because parking became a problem, and concert-goers continued to flow into the amphitheater until it finally started. And the rest of the night was beautiful music! He was joined in the second half by a very popular Guatemalan performer named Gaby Moreno, much to the delight of the audience. We got home about 12:30am--way after "missionary hours", but a wonderful evening none-the-less, excepting perhaps the extra 1 1/2 before the concert.
